From Pro-Social Behavior to Pragmatic Empathy in Discourse: Insights into Linguistic Consciousness

У статті розглянуто емпатію як інструмент просоціальної поведінки із залученням дискурсивного аналізу. З огляду на сучасні теоретичні інтерпретації емпіричних даних, що являють собою прагматичний аспект емпатії, у праці зроблено спробу довести, що в мовній свідомості пробудження, надання та прийняття емпатії базуються на когнітивних процесах ідентифікації, інкорпорації, реверберації та роз'єднання. Ці процеси є етапами емпатійного дискурсивного акту і наводять на думку про його ритуалістичність.В статье рассматривается эмпатия как инструмент просоциального поведения с привлечением дискурсивного анализа. Учитывая современные теоретические интерпретации эмпирических данных, представляющих прагматический аспект эмпатии, в работе предпринята попытка доказать, что в языковом сознании пробуждение, предоставление и принятие эмпатии базируются на когнитивных процессах идентификации, инкорпорации, реверберации и разъединения. Данные процессы являются этапами эмпатического дискурсивного акта и наводят на мисль о его ритуалистичности.The article considers empathy as an instrument of prosocial behavior with the involvement of discursive analysis. Taking into account the current theoretical interpretations of empirical data representing the pragmatic aspect of empathy, the paper attempts to prove that in the language consciousness, elicitation, giving, and acceptance of empathy are based on the cognitive processes of identification, incorporation, reverberation, and detachment. These processes are stages of the empathic discursive act and suggest the thought of its rituality

Ця стаття являє собою всебічний розгляд концепту ЕМПАТІЯ (лексикалізованого словом "емпатія") у сучасному англійському дискурсі. Мета дослідження подвійна: а) отримати розуміння того, як концепт ЕМПАТІЯ (як динамічна когнітивна модель) використовується мовцями, тобто осягнути його природу та характер; б) запропонувати теорію про самоорганізацію трьох концептуальних вимірів ЕМПАТІЇ: логічного, ідентифікаційного та структурного.Эта статья представляет собой всестороннее рассмотрение концепта ЭМПАТИЯ (лексикализированного словом "эмпатия") в современном английском дискурсе. У статті проведено комплексний аналіз концепту ЕМПАТІЯ як когнітивно-комунікативного утворення, втіленого засобами сучасної англійської мови, за допомогою фреймових моделей та модусного структурування. Проаналізовано понятійний модус емпатії з виокремленням граматичного профілювання як його основного конституента.В статье проведён комплексный анализ концепта ЭМПАТИЯ как когнитивно-коммуникативного образования, воплощённого средствами современного английского языка, с помощью фреймових моделей и модусного структурирования. Проанализирован понятийный модус эмпатии с выделением грамматического профилирования как его основного конституэнта.The article provides a comprehensive analysis of the concept EMPATHY as a cognitive and communicative entity, embodied by means of modern English language, using frame models and modus structuring. The notional modus of concept EMPATHY is analyzed with singling out of grammatical shaping as its principal constituent. Epidigmatic structure of the lexical units representing empathy in English discourse mirrors different ways of a person’s reflective perception of the ability to identify with another person or to understand his/her views. Thus, the function of grammatical shaping of the notional modus of concept EMPATHY, embodied in lexical units, is to systematize the constitutive features of its recognizable essence. The sole conceptual base lies at the core of these units – it is the frame of notional modus of concept EMPATHY, but the conceptualizer’s attention is focused on its various slots. The slots are: empathy (n) – INSTRUMENT/AGENT, empathizer/empathiser (n) – AGENT, empathizee/empathisee (n) – PATIENT, empathize/empathise (v) – ACTION, empathetic/empathic (adj), empathizing/empathizing (adj) – SUCH, empathetically/empathically (adv), empathizingly/empathisingly (adv) – SO. Formation and cognitive-semasiological interpretation of the concept, approximated to scientific definition, are the result of purposeful cognitive activity of the subject of cognition and reflect his/her general socio-cultural experience

Empathy as a category of linguistic pragmatics

Аналізується функціонування емпатійних конверсаційних імплікатур, а також реалізація в комунікативних комплексах принципу кооперації, що сприяє підтриманню гармонійних емпатійних стосунків між комунікантами.В статье представлены различные подходы к толкованию эмпатии в современной лингвистике. Эмпатия исследуется сквозь призму лингвистической прагматики. Анализируется функционирование эмпатических конверсационных импликатур, а также реализация в коммуникативных комплексах принципа кооперации, который способствует поддержанию гармоничных эмпатических отношений между коммуникантами.The article provides insights into different approaches to the interpretation of empathy in modern linguistics. It looks fundamentally at empathy through the prism of linguistic pragmatics. The paper also examines the operation of empathic conversational implicatures, as well as the implementation of a set of principles of communicative cooperation, which contribute to the maintenance of harmonious empathic relations between the communicants. Having purposeful nature, empathy is an intentional act which demonstrates pragmatic intentions of the speaker to take the place of another person, the desire to comprehend his/her personal experiences, to show intent to influence his/her emotions and behavior. Thus, the pragmatic empathic aspect can be described in terms of a prepared, focused, manipulative action. The level of emotional and evaluative competence of the participants of communicative situation, their social experience, specific worldview determine the degree of empathic cooperation integrating to the sphere of balanced verbal and nonverbal actions aimed at explication of empathic implicatures. Empathic conversational implicature is hidden information, closely linked to the verbal content which mediates semantic relationship between phrases and organizes their interactive focus on the implementation of empathy. The paper principally concludes the following: empathic implicature is based on those meaning components, which are provided by the presumption of existence of the cooperative principle. The cooperative principle is aimed primarily at the semantic part of participants’ contributions towards communication, at the ways of expressing the speaker’s values and especially at the ways of their semantic interpretations. Thereby it serves the process of regulation and optimization of empathic verbal interaction

Types of Verbal Attractors of EMPATHY Concept in Contemporary English Discourse

У статті з позицій когнітивної лінгвосинергетики розкривається динамічна природа концепту ЕМПАТІЯ, аналізуються типи його вербальних атракторів з побудовою їхніх моделей. Доведено, що динаміка вербальних атракторів спрямована до чотирьох типів функціонування: точкового (рівновага з дискурсивним середовищем), періодичного (слабка рівновага з дискурсивним середовищем), квазіперіодичного (нерівновага з дискурсивним середовищем) та дивного (нова рівновага з дискурсивним середовищем). Вибір вербальних атракторів має стихійний характер.В статье с позиций когнитивной лингвосинергетики раскрывается динамическая природа концепта ЭМПАТИЯ, анализируются типы его вербальных аттракторов с построением их моделей. Доказано, что динамика вербальных аттракторов направлена на четыре типа функционирования: точечный (равновесие с дискурсивной средой), периодический (слабое равновесие с дискурсивной средой), квазипериодический (неравновесие с дискурсивной средой) и странный (новое равновесие с дискурсивной средой). Выбор вербальных аттракторов имеет стихийный характер.The article reveals the dynamic nature of EMPATHY concept from the standpoint of cognitive linguosynergetics analyzing the types of its verbal attractors with the construction of their models. The paper proves that the dynamics of verbal attractors is directed to four types of functioning: point (one structure – lexical item empathy), periodic (two structures – lexical items empathy and sympathy), quasi-periodic (n-number of structures – vocabulary with direct or indirect meaning of empathy present in the semantic core of the word (including idioms)), and strange (cases when the speaker constructs speech expressions which seemingly have nothing to do with EMPATHY concept). Depending on the needs of communication EMPATHY concept can spontaneously switch from one mode to another by means of phase transition or bifurcation marked by the change of existing attractor. Point attractor is characterized by equilibrium with the discursive environment: the behavior of EMPATHY concept brought to one lexical item is independent of the context of the discursive act. Periodic attractor has a weak equilibrium with the discursive environment, resulted in quite a sustainable concept functioning in discourse. Quasi-periodic attractor is characterized by disequilibrium with the discursive environment, and the strange one – by a new equilibrium, with which the concept structure never repeats itself, although its self-organization is subject to the rules of fractal self-similarity. The choice of verbal attractors is spontaneous in nature because communicants can unexpectedly use any language as a result of certain cognitive impulse. The possible choice of system development takes place at the micro level of potential conceptual states. The cognitive micro level is formed by lexical concepts which randomly interact with each other with such a speed that makes them indistinguishable within discourse. Externally the choice dynamics of potential attractors remains invisible until the moment of their implementation at the macro level of the discursive act, confirming the fact that all processes in the system hierarchy of EMPATHY concept are separated in space and time

У статті поданий лексико-стилістичний аналіз вербальних засобів вираження емпатії в англомовному політичному дискурсі. Опираючись на принципи класифікації емоційної лексики, виділено корпус лексичних одиниць, що використовуються в емпатійних висловленнях. Виявлено стратегії емпатизації політичного дискурсу.В статье представлен лексико-стилистический анализ вербальных средств выражения эмпатии в англоязычном политическом дискурсе. Опираясь на принципы классификации эмоциональной лексики, выделяется корпус лексических единиц, используемых в эмпатийных высказываниях.
